Zombies on Fire

STELLA!!!!

As promised, the first title to grace the circuits of my new machine is Half Life 2. I acquired this game when it came out as part of my ATI Radeon video card purchase a few years ago. I couldn’t get a satisfactory resolution on my old PC, so I decided to wait and experience the game in its full glory. Now I can happily max out the settings.

In 1956, when this photo was taken, I weighed next to nothing, whereas this behemoth (the first ever 5MB HDD!) weighed a ton.   Fast forward a half century, and now I weigh a ton and 5MB weighs nothing at all…(additional life lessons such as this can be found in my new inspirational self-help book, “Why Everything Sucks”)

Express Yourself

I’m on to you Schmidt….

I’ve made great progress in The Last Express. At least, I think I have. As I’ve said before, this is a game like no other and it’s a bit disconcerting at first. You do a lot of wondering around the train without a specific task at hand; hoping to run into the right person at the right time or overhear a revealing discussion. I’ve already arrived at one of the bad endings and the game kindly rewound the clock to before I made the wrong decision so I could have another go at it. I’m glad I won’t have to replay the entire game in order to discover the one correct ending. It’s strange how much this game feels like an MMO because the train’s occupants wander around freely and interact with each other.

If you’re on GameTap, it’s worth firing up just to experience its unique gameplay.

I’ve spent a couple of pretty intense weeks now with Vanguard:Saga of Heroes, and before the self-loathing sets in, let me say the game is pretty great. The sense of scale is awesome–the world feels huge and real. The art direction and design are top-notch. The community is polite and helpful. There is always something new or interesting to do, whether it be PvE combat, quests, diplomacy, or crafting. It’s sort of like a grown-up version of Everquest (some of the same design team as the original EQ). (Read on …)

No Mexicans were harmed in the making of this standoff

I am absolutely loving this year’s Winter Games, because I feel like I’m making a whole lot of progress on some truly enjoyable titles that I’d put down for one inexcusable reason or another. Today’s bomb du jour comes courtesy of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, the 3rd title in the popular stealth franchise. (Read on …)
