God Games

Posted by Dodongo on Saturday, October 22, 2005

On the heels of the release of Black and White 2, I’d like to talk about a different kind of God game. A game created for the Christian who likes to kill things, but feels guilty about it afterwards (you know who you are). It’s called “Eternal War: Shadows of Light and even though it was released in 2003, you’ll be gaming like it’s 1996.

Prince of Persia 2 (part 1)

Posted by DevilsAdvocate on Friday, October 21, 2005

Innovation, at least in terms of video game design, seems to be a topic many publishers love to discuss but few truly pursue. It might sound funny that I’d reference this topic, given I’m about to review what some have called a clone of one of the longest running franchises (Tomb Raider). However, Ubisoft’s first take on the side-scroller Prince of Persia was a rare treat.

I can only equate the success of their execution to that of the recent “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie in which the makers were able to take a popular, if somewhat 2 dimensional ride and turn it into a fast paced adventure with a fully fleshed out story to boot.

How to Kill a Zombie…

Posted by Daedalus on Thursday, October 20, 2005

I think the attitude as a whole of Eat My Bomb towards certain games is quite clear and uncontested…

  • Halo 2’s “ending” was a slap in the face that marred what was otherwise an excellent experience.
  • The marketing SNAFUs that befell Beyond Good & Evil and Psychonauts fall somewhere between “petty theft” and “priestworthy buggering” on the scale of violation.
  • Stubbs the Zombie seems to be shaping up to be one of the last truly great games on the Xbox as the system nears the end of its life cycle. (Yes, I know that they’ll continue to make Xbox games after the 360 comes out, but how much attention did you pay to the PSX after the PS2 came out?)

Me Likey Expanded Content

Posted by Ruckus on Wednesday, October 19, 2005

I was as pleased as these guys to play Fable: The Lost Chapters.

I find myself increasingly on the downside of the technology curve these days, mostly because I limit myself to one console system (the venerable PS2) and I don’t own a portable. The upshot of this technological lag is that games that are old to some are brand spanking new to me. Take Fable, for example. Bucho’s been playing this game for over a year and I only started two weeks ago. However, I think I came out on top in this scenario because my first Fable purchase was the expanded content game Fable: The Lost Chapters.

WTF is the deal with these game-themed movies?

Posted by Denalan on Tuesday, October 18, 2005

Tim has been covering a lot of video games based on movies, but in this day in age we also have movies based on video games. It started with Super Mario Bros. the Movie going all the way up to Doom the movie. If you didn’t know yet, Doom the movie is being released this Friday, Oct. 21 2005 (though some theaters are showing it on Thursday). And I’m prepared to be disappointed.

The Rock battles monsters and constipation in Doom the Movie

I guess the major qualm I have with game-based movies is that none of them have been particularly good. These movies seem to be coming out more often now, which is unfortunate that we’re getting more quantity than quality.

The Colossus
Prepare to eat bomb

First an update on Black & White: This game may have pissed me off enough to never play it again. I will give it one last try later this week. If I am not suddenly overwhelmed with entertainment, it will go back to my shelf never to be installed again. Now, on with the story.

Last week I got a demo disc in the mail for Shadow of the Colossus on PS2. I didn’t know much about the game going into the demo except for the fact that it was developed by the same team that created Ico for PS2. Just as they did with Ico, the developers have managed to milk every last bit of performance and graphic quality out of the PS2’s soon to be outdated hardware.

On the Subject of Staque

Posted by Staque on Sunday, October 16, 2005

Ok, I have been meaning to write this for a while, but school is busy.

As some of you know, though most do not, I have decided to go back to school. Specifically, graduate school in the Entertainment Technology Center at Carnegie-Mellon. Basically I have gone back to school to learn how to make video games. The ETC actually covers several more areas than just games, but that’s the idea in ten words or less. So what is it like studying Entertainment Technology?
