Star Trek: Elite Force

It’s quiet….. TOO quiet…
Next on my Winter Games 2007 list is Star Trek: Elite Force. This shooter from 2000 is considered by many to be the best Star Trek game ever. As it is the only Star Trek game I’ve played, I’ll have to agree. As an FPS it’s very entertaining and I can only imagine how much fun I’d be having if I actually liked Star Trek.

Hey baby… how’s about I beam up in dat?
All the makings of a great FPS are here; interesting story, diverse enemies and environments, an array of cool weapons, quality graphics and sound; and for the Trekkies you’ve got a replica of The Enterprise to walk around in and voice acting by the Next Generation cast. The game uses the Quake 3 engine, but it still looks pretty good due to its graphic novel style. I’ve come across some minor bugs like these detached shadows, but nothing terrible.

In addition to the great single player gameplay, Elite Force also has some nifty Multiplayer utilizing the Holodeck to upload combat simulations. There are even old west and medieval castle levels with period appropriate enemies. I haven’t played much against other humans, but the bot matches are some of the best I’ve played. They’ve done a great job of balancing the bot skill level to make it feel like a real player.
If you’re a Star Trek fan and have a tolerance for old graphic engines, this is definitely something to check out. You can probably find it for $1 in a bin somewhere.
Live long and prospa, Suckaz!!!
