Stinging comments, to be sure, but I appreciate Tom Clancy taking the time to write in.

Ok for starters, let’s all secure a copy of The Little Brown Handbook. I’d like to understand your comments, Defqon. I haven’t played the game personally, but are you saying that you no longer have to make a tactical plan before starting a mission? Do you still need to outfit your team based on the conditions of the operation?

As for your comment of “You’re RS Vegas review sucks”, it sounds like your gripe is with the game itself, not our review. And please keep in mind that we review the games that we play as they are, not as what we wish they could be.

The last Rainbow Six game I played was Ravenshield on the PC. While I enjoyed Ravenshield, many players found it entirely too difficult and frustrating. Perhaps Ubisoft Montreal is trying to make the game more accessible for the mass market.

I’ve written an interpretation of the above comment (please note that these opinions are not my own):

I enjoy your podcast immensely; however, the Rainbow Six: Vegas review lacked insight and gave undeserved credit to a game that compares unfavorably to the original series.

The latest edition of Rainbow Six is more of an action-based first-person-shooter. For example, there are only two AI operatives on your team instead of having as many as eight, which takes less skill to control. Additionally, the TPV (third-person-view) cover system detracts from what should be a realistic tactical shooting game, as players can view more than what they should be able to see. Also, the large, open maps belong more in a regular action arcade game than a realistic shooter.

The developer alienated those of us who liked the tactical-based Rainbow Six games by releasing a title that deviates greatly from the original gameplay, and thus I find your gushing review of this game to be apprehensible. Word.

Good job, Denalan.
I haven’t played any of the games since Raven Shield/Athena Sword either, so I can’t join the debate. However, I have heard that the series is becoming more straight forward action than tactical shooter, but as long as it doesn’t deviate too much from the original gameplay I guess it can be okay.

In all seriousness, the game is basically an action game with tactical squad elements. There is no pre-mission planning; there are weapon selection options (but only for your character, and not the team) at various points along the way (and this is pretty unrealistically handled), so you do have some control over the gear you use for a segment or mission. Someone who was unaware of the “evolution” of the series and had only seen the first game and this one would barely recognize the relationship.

Whether that is good or bad, and why and how it happened (thank you, consoles!) is a whole ‘nuther issue, and not part of my review.

My comments were directed towards one particular game and not at the series as whole, nor was I particularly concerned whether R6 Vegas upheld, extended, transformed, or rewrotes the rules of tactical shooters.

Taken as a stand-alone game, it was a lot of fun, and very well designed.

Can I just revel in the fact that I found someone with an even more tentative grasp on the English language than my own?

Take it from someone who types like Dustin Hoffman reacting to a smoke alarm in Rainman: You tend to lose “you’re” audience when you stumble right out of the gate.

PS - Can I hire Denalan to transcribe for me? How much per ower?

Although it did start out by saying someone had a “nice but.”

The only fair way to judge a Tom Clancy game is this: does it have a copier?

Yup. Right near the beginning of the Vegas levels. Not only is it copying, it is COLLATING!
