Victory!

So here it is - the final update to the ongoing Prince of Persia: Warrior Within experiment. (I swear, honest-like.)

I’ll cut to the chase: given the horrible (am I being too kind?) experience a fellow editor here had with the Xbox version of this game, I’m frankly flabbergasted I enjoyed the PC version so much. I finished the game long before my co-editor was driven to smash said game with a hammer. I went back to make sure I wasn’t simply too inebriated the first time around to notice the bugs which he detailed.

Nope, none. (Aside from the useless ‘map’ feature that is supposedly there to help you - but thats more a poor design choice than a bug.)

In fact, I went so far as to go back and replay to unlock not only all the available life upgrades - but also the mysterious hockey stick & water sword.

How’d it go? You tell me.

First, I was able to find the elusive Hockey Stick. Then I procured the Water Sword.

You said it.....

With these devastating weapons, unlocking the Sand Wraith mask was no problem. Very cool. I even found time to locate the glowing sword I had heard mentioned in various forums. This weapon is ridiculously powerful, almost too much….until you realize that using it will drain your health quickly while you choose to unleash its fury.

Finally, I was able to unlock the alternate ending and fight the Dahaka. Based on reports of the recently released third Prince of Persia title (The Two Thrones), the alternate ending unlocked by obtaining the Water Sword is actually the ending that is assumed in final installment. Given that i knew I’d at least give the final chapter a shot, I figured i might as well follow the storyline as its intended.

Which left one little job - to spare the hot antagonist Kaileena and go after the big badass Dahaka himself. Done and done.

Bomb. Fed.
Sorry, I don’t do autographs…..

The prince even gets some lovin’ before the game wraps up with a somewhat cliched ominous foreboding (not cliched enough, however, to turn me off)….

Just a spoonful of sugar.....
All’s well that ends well……..sort of

FINAL VERDICT - if nothing else, this has ended up being an interesting (and unintended) comparison shop between an “A class” title released for the console and PC. In an unusal twist, its the console getting the shaft. While thats fine for the PC gamer, it reflects poorly on the publisher Ubisoft. I honestly would like to break out of my PC only funk and experience some good old fashioned console fun (free from long boot times, compatibility and driver update issues of the pc) - this is not encouraging.

Nevertheless, the Dahaka has been fed the bomb and he had no complaints……save for the slight burning sensation.

There is only one solution to this conflict of opinion: a fight to the death!

Two editors enter, one editor leaves.

Before one of you dies an agonizing death, however, I’d like to know what changed between the PC and console version that made the game so different. Could you address some of Dodongo’s hammer-causing gripes and how they translate to the PC?

Of course, the next logical test that must be performed is to try the game on another Xbox to make sure that the bugs can be duplicated before the dubbing the game defective. I believe it’s entirely possible that by modding your Xbox and installing additional software you may have inherently altered the stability of the system as a whole, opening the door to problems such as these.

A trial is in order. Tim, can I borrow your copy?

…….ummmm, and some crazy glue?

Tim, i thought we agreed to not use our real names. If ‘tim’ is even your real name…

As far as the technical troubles Dodongo experienced - I didnt see any of them. No save bugs, no scripting/action bugs, nothing. So thats probably why I didn’t have the disc smashingly bad time he did.

As far as his take on the story - I would agree that the quality of narrative is less that that of the original, but the original was fresh and new and we’re talking about a sequel here. In my opinion its a traditional “incremental upgrades to action, linear extrapolation of original story, omre of what you like” sequel. They made it a little edgy-er to appeal to the unwashed masses…..or maybe to foreshadow the transformation of the protagonist in the third and final installment.

Either way - I’m moving onto a new game before Dodongo has a stroke

Daedalus - follow the bad bug link on my review post and you’ll see that modding had nothing to do with it. I only encountered a small fraction of the veritable bug buffet Warrior has to offer.

D.A. - A.J. could stand for anything Mr. Prufrock.

Also, the inclusion of Godsmack is an instant strike against.

This is an obvious case of love/hate. Half of the reviews I’ve read for Two Thrones say it’s a return to form after WW and the other half say it’s a fitting conclusion to a great trilogy. If you followed a walkthrough and/or got the life upgrades like they want you to, apparantly a lot of the bugs don’t appear. The PC is a non issue thanks to patching, but even without the bugs I might have hammered this polished turd for making me backtrack so much. DevilsAdvocate plays a lot of WoW and is perhaps better suited than me to running back and forth and back and forth all night long.

As usual - you have to bring the truth into it. Damn you and your truth telling.

I guess the first step of WoW recovery is denial.

“My name is AJ and I enjoy grinding and delivery quests, even when they are not ‘fun’ in any sense of the word. I even have gotten so bas as to enjoy it as a single player experience with no xp reward. I sometimes wish there was an offline WoW where i could practice grinding (with bots of course)….help me”

Let the healing begin.

Actually, fuck that - i’m only 7 levels away from 60! See you later suckers!
