Crossbow
Man vs Nature

Hello from New Orleans, readers. My choice of video games is quite limited when I’m on the road so I decided to take a walk down memory lane courtesy of MAME. I came up with the arcade classic Crossbow. This game had a crossbow mounted on the arcade cabinet. In emulation, the crossbow is replaced by the mouse. If you’re big on authenticity, visit Logitech’s site to sign the petition for a USB crossbow controller.

Your job as the master crossbowman is to protect your party of characters from horrors encountered on a leisurely stroll. The jackasses in your party know nothing of defending themselves and march forward relentlessly. Their walking routes include deserts, jungles, volcanoes, caverns, and finally a castle. In the screenshot above, you can see me defending my helpless crew against rabid monkeys and a bloodthirsty toucan. Don’t worry, all party members made it through unscathed. Crossbow was a major gaming triumph as the first arcade game to use digitized audio and a light gun. It’s also the first arcade game to use a crossbow as far as I know. It’s 22 years old but it’s still a butter-churning good time.

Can anyone think of a nerdier weapon than a crossbow?

Maybe a staff?

Yeah, staff is nerdier.

I’ve never heard of this game before. My arcade days began around 1990.

I’ll have to get my MAME on.

I’d have to say a wand is nerdier. I mean, at least you could club someone on the head with a staff.

On another note- thanks for reminding my I have 9gigs of ROMs kicking around that need playing.

‘Russian Attack’ WILL NOT defeat me again. Then on to Defender, and maybe tempest.

You youngsters and your I’ve-never-heard-of-crossbow shenanigans. To put this in perspective, the last time I played crossbow I was wearing roller skates at the skating rink because that was the cool thing to do in the day. The sad part is that this game is all about the crossbow; the game is a pale specter of itself without the giant ass crossbow.

Actually, I did play some arcade in the eighties while wearing roller skates, but it was usually
Jungle King.

Jungle King - Speedskate at the Roller Kingdom…..its all coming back to me now….

I think the best “fixed position” games I ever had the pleasure of playing were Time Crisis by Namco (the light gun & the Pedal to duck/Reload) and a similar game where you were the door gunner on a helicopter flying over an urban area war.
