More Sony Bologna

Posted by Dodongo on Monday, October 8, 2007

Sony has announced that it’s phasing out the 60G model of the PS3 in favor of a cheaper 40G model. On top of this, they are giving up PS2 backwards compatibility entirely. The latter news has all but completely extinguished my desire to buy a PS3. Does anyone here still plan to get one?

I’m wondering if the decision to nix compatibility is due to the PS2 still selling well. It out sold all three next gen consoles last Xmas and is still priced fairly high considering how old the technology is. Frankly, I think they’re fucking liars and knew from the start that full compatibility wasn’t even possible, but had to lie about it to compete with Nintendo and Microsoft. They better get their asses in gear or they’re going to get killed this Xmas also.

If you want to play PS2 games, it’s much better to get a PS2; the PS3’s compatibility isn’t all that great. In fact, the only console that plays the previous gen’s games well is the Wii. Even the the 360 has problems with some if the previous gen’s Xbox games.

It seems like Sony is trying to remove components of their console (no PS2 compatibility, fewer USB ports, two connections, and no slots for memory cards) in order drop the PS3’s price to compete with Microsoft.

IMHO, both console’s prices are too high, especially when you add in the extras, such as wireless controllers, headset, Xbox Live (for 360), wifi adapter, and high(er)-priced games.

I’m waiting for the prices to drop, and for some better games to come out. In the meantime I’ll stick with my PC and Wii.

There are other, cheaper alternatives Steve…

I celebrate this news because I won’t be happy until I own 12 consoles. Backward compatibility doesn’t carry too much weight with me these days. And while keeping your PS2 around is considered an inconvenience by some, it’s nothing compared to the issues associated with legacy PC gaming.

Personal stats

Number of original Xbox games played on my 360: Zero
Number of GameCube games played on my Wii: Zero

Ffej, those stats are meaningless because you (unlike a lot of people) already owned an Xbox and Gamecube before purchasing the upgrades. Some of us have more reasonable (and healthier) video gaming habits and do not have the time, money, television inputs, and/or space in the TV stand to fit a PS2, PS3, Xbox, 360, Gamecube, and Wii. Unless the companies can team up with LEGO and agree on a cohesive flat / stackable design for all future consoles, I’m going to end up choosing one over the other.

And no, that VCR isn’t going anywhere…

Those stats are in fact completely meaningful because a “lot of people” own first and second generation consoles and aren’t looking forward to getting a PS3 because it would allow them to play a 13-year back catalog of games. You’re an outlander. And we have your woman!

And since when are we on a first-name basis here, Tim. When we’s pullin’ a heist, we use the damned code names!

Did you remember to send out that the memo RE: code names?

Thank you for the reference because, indeed, I would have had no idea.

“Backward compatibility doesn’t carry too much weight with me these days.”

Yes.  That’s probably because you’re spending most of your 360 time playing Lumines…

How would you know what I play on my 360? You don’t call, you don’t write. It’s like I don’t know you anymore!

See you tonight for gaming.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that this has “srsly” dented my enthusiasm for the PS3. I was one of those staunch PS3 fans but all of these moves make me think that Sony is willing to sacrifice functionality of the console at the benefit of price. How about instead of making the thing a bigger piece of shit they negotiate some games that are worth buying a console for?
